Written by word-wizard and snake-catcher extraordinaire Jarrod Paine, Snakes Awake follows Pip and her mum as they explore the Australian bush in summer.

The illustrations were created to reflect the muted colours and textures of the Australian bush. Having grown up in rural Victoria, these were scenes particularly close to home for me. I chose a textured paper that was perfect in its imperfections with a subdued, natural palette.

With layers upon layers touched up with a bit of paint or pencil, each illustration was assembled slowly, but surely.
